Production Engineer | BASF - The Chemical Company | Newport, DE
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
- Responsible for quality and process troubleshooting, process optimization and improvement ideas as well as their implementation to accomplish site objectives by the most safe, economical and technically feasible methods
- Continually monitor and modify departmental goals to insure compatibility with corporate goals and objectives
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that all activities are performed in a safe manner. Support and adhere to the principles of the American Chemistry Council's Responsible CareŽ, and OSHA VPP by protecting the environment, health, safety and security of our employees, contractors, carriers, distributors, visitors, customers and neighbors
- Review, monitor, develop, modify and maintain manufacturing processes and their control systems to maximize contribution to profitability. Utilize lean manufacturing tools where appropriate.
- Provide an example of leadership that is consistent with the common objectives and values throughout the organization
- Monitor, and help establish, the performance standards for the manufacturing process and the systems which control them. Maintain process databases and provide timely and routine feedback to those responsible for the performance
- Troubleshoot system and process problems in collaboration with other production engineers, process support engineers and others to ensure that all aspects of the manufacturing process, process control system and equipment operation are managed effectively
- Provide support to area manager to ensure all ISO, PSM and other regulatory, external and internal, requirements are met. This includes, but is not limited to: coordinating and leading PHAs, managing/supporting the Change Manager and AIM reporting tools, investigating incidents, driving/coordinating closure of action items
- Ensure that ongoing proficiency training is conducted to improve skills and to keep current with technology

Work environment
- Identify opportunities to improve all aspects of manufacturing processes and their control systems, ensure appropriate allocation of approved resources
Business environment
- Must increase operational effectiveness when essential resources are limited, delayed or denied
Internal end external relationships
- Frequent interaction with:
Other Synthesis personnel (daily), Production Planning/Detailed Scheduling group, Finishing Production, Maintenance and Project Engineering, Site EHS personnel, Process Support engineers, Finance/Accounting and Purchasing.
- Occasional interaction with:
Human Resources, consultants for training/control systems; contractors for maintenance services and auditors (e.g., ISO, Financial or EHS compliance)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree required, Chemical Engineering preferred. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education
- 5 to 10 years technical experience in the Chemical industry and strong exposure to batch operations and automation systems
- Working knowledge within chemical processes - both batch and continuous operations
- Strong background in process engineering (particularly equipment design, troubleshooting and process optimization) desired
- Must be able to work independently, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and serving as a member or interfacing with multi-disciplinary teams
